A frenectomy is the removal or reattachment of either the labial or lingual frenum. This procedure is usually done under a local anesthetic.

There are two types of frenectomies: a labial frenectomy and a lingual frenectomy. The purpose of this procedure is to help facilitate movement of both the tongue and lip.

This procedure is also done for children or adolescents with a very large, prominent labial frenum between the two maxillary central incisors to allow teeth to come together without spacing.
