The clinical presentation of patients with symptoms of anterograde amnesia includes forgetfulness.

In fact, the level of forgetfulness may vary from one patient to another. In case of patients suffering from global amnesia, they will be showing signs and symptoms of anterograde amnesia as well as retrograde amnesia.

In case of patients showing symptoms of anterograde amnesia that is caused due to various drugs, the condition is temporary and the condition may be resolved with the passage of time.

According to clinical records, it has been found that most drug induced anterograde amnesia may be permanent.

The treatment of this condition would depend on the Pathophysiology of the disease. In patients showing symptoms of anterograde amnesia, there may be some capacity for learning but it seems to be highly elementary.

Care for patients suffering from symptoms of anterograde amnesia requires consistent efforts that are combined with lots of love and care. In certain cases patients suffering from anterograde amnesia will be able to recall events before the injury.

However, they will be unable to recall events that were presented to them after the injury occurred. The treatment of anterograde amnesia will depend on the extent of damage to the central nervous system. Patients suffering from amnesia anterograde syndrome will be showing varying levels of forgetfulness.

In some patients, global amnesia is often observed, and in this condition there is a combined effect of amnesia anterograde as well as amnesia retrograde. In certain cases where amnesia anterograde is caused as a side effect of various drugs, the patient will eventually overcome the symptoms associated with amnesia. In these cases, the capacity to learn has been found to be elementary.

According to research, it has been found that some patients may suffer from severe damage due to the disease. There may be permanent loss to memory and the recovery will depend on the Pathophysiology of the disease.

In this case, the patient may not remember how to do regular tasks like cycling, typing or talking on the phone, but he may not be able to recollect what he had had for lunch on the previous day. The patient may even lack the ability to remember the temporal context in which the objects have been presented.

Thus, as a result of this study on patients suffering from amnesia anterograde, it has been found that patients suffering from temporal context memory have been found to be more significant, that the deficit found in the case of semantic learning abilities. There are many famous cases of patients suffering from anterograde amnesia and the case involving Henry Molaison is one of them.

Henry Molaison, who was also known as H.M. was identified with anterograde amnesia in the year 1957. In the clinical presentation of the condition, it was found that H.M suffered from persistent severe seizures after he was operated for bilateral lobectomy.

In this surgical procedure both the MTL’s were removed. As a result of this surgery there was bilateral damage or traumatic injury to the hippocampus as well as the perrhinal cortex. According to researchers, it was found that in spite of the damage, H.M was found to be having normal level of intelligence. He had good perceptual ability   and a decent vocabulary.

But, since he was not able to remember any new words or learn new tasks, it was deduced that he was suffering fromanterograde amnesia. According to medical journals, this was the first known case of amnesia. The case is extensively studied in order to comprehend the concept of anterograde amnesia. Since then a large number of cases with amnesia have been reported and extensively studied in order to ascertain various aspect of the condition.

It has been found that some patients may be suffering from anterograde amnesia as well as retrograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia, is a type of amnesia where the individual is unable to recall events that occurred before the onset of amnesia. According to experts, retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia may be found in the same individual, thus  leading to various complications.

The condition of retrograde amnesia has been subdivided into two main categories, that are known as temporally graded retrograde type of amnesia and stable , temporally upgraded retrograde amnesia. This condition may be caused due to damage to the brain region, including the episodic or declarative memory. In this case, hippocampus and  temporal lobes are also involved in the brain injury.

According to the neuroscientists , it is difficult to ascertain the exact critical changes that occur in the central nervous system and lead to retrograde amnesia. According to Ribot’s law, all remote memories  are easily accessible as compared to memories about events that occurred just prior to the brain injury. Thus as a result of this condition, the patient is unable to recall the events that occurs just before the brain injury.

Most often, individuals who are affected by retrograde type of amnesia may be embarrassed, as they cannot recall their memories about important people in their lives. It may be stressful for them to deal with significant events in their life,  as they are unable to recall all past experiences.
