An osteotomy is any procedure that requires cutting bone. In some cases this is done to remove bone and at other times this procedure is done to cut through the bone to allow the oral surgeon to reposition the two pieces of bone.

The reasons for an osteotomy are:

1. The removal of maxillary or mandibular tori to old in denture fabrication.

2. The repositioning of the maxilla or mandible for cosmetic and functional reasons.

3. The reconstruction of facial bones which are damaged due to trauma.

Osteotomy can be done with mallets and bone chisels, drills with burs, surgical mechanical reciprocating saws, and surgical hand saws.
