FUNCTION OF BICUSPID VALVE

The function of bicuspid valve is crucial. The heart has four valves out of which the bicuspid valve is one of them. The bicuspid valve or mitral valve is located between left atrium and left ventricle, and it allows the flow of blood to flow from left auricle to left ventricle.

The mitral valve is also known as the bicuspid valve because of the presence of two, cusps that is valves. Valves causes the flow of blood from arteries to ventricles or from the ventricles to arteries. The bicuspid aortic valve is the most common deformity of the heart.

A bicuspid aortic valve is a condition of the heart, where the valves do not fully develop. There are only two valves It is a congenital condition prevalent in 1-2 % of the children. Many people with bicuspid valve deformity do not experience any symptoms, unless  there is any infection of the valves.

Here the function of bicuspid valve declines resulting in calcification of the valve, causing restricted blood flow to the aorta. This results in aortic stenosis, when the  two valves fail to close  to prevent back flow of the blood, it causes aortic regurgitation  in this condition people often complain of shortness of breath and it gets infected by bacteria causing endocarditis  as the age advances of the individual.

The function of bicuspid valve is to prevent back flow of blood. The function of bicuspid valve is to act as a trap to prevent the back flow of oxygenated blood into the atria. And to prevent reverse flow of blood as the heart contracts When there is contraction of the ventricles the blood flows through the open bicuspid atrioventricular valve into the ventricles.

when the ventricles start contraction, the pressure rises and the blood flows against the valve cusps, which pushes the valves to close atrioventricular valve. The other conditions associated with the function of bicuspid valve in a bicuspid aortic valve are aneurysm of the aorta. When the function of bicuspid valve fails, treatment required is aortic valve replacement.
