Diverticular disease colon

Diverticular disease colon is a digestive disease and it is also referred to a diverticulitis of the colon. This is due to the formation of pouch like structures referred to as diverticula on the outside of the colon.

The process of formation of the pouch like structures is known as diverticulosis. The diverticular disease colon results when one of the diverticula (pouches) becomes inflamed.

The diverticular disease colon disease is symptomised by the occurrence of pain in the lower abdomen that is accompanied by fever. Blood tests reveal and elevation in the white blood cell count.

The patient may be constipated due to the presence of diverticular disease colon. In other cases, there is vomiting followed by diarrhea? In case the patient has a right sided sigmoid colon, the pain may also occur in the lower right part of the abdomen.

According to experts the diverticular disease colon occurs when the individual is taking a diet that lacks dietary fiber, this could result in constipation leading to increased interluminal colonic pressure.

Thus diverticula of the colon are formed in the sigmoid colon. The procedure for the treatment of the disease involves, providing complete bowel rest, where fluid resuscitation is provided to the patient.

A large number of antibiotics are given in order to combat the inflammation in the colon. At the time of completion of the treatment, the patient is advised to take a low residue diet that is high in fiber content. In case of medical emergency a surgery may be performed in order to remove the diverticulitis of the colon.
